CAVOODLE BASICS
Cavoodles, also called Cavapoos, are one of the most loved and popular dogs in Australia. Their fun nature, combined with a low shedding coat, make them the ideal pet for families with children or mild allergy sufferers.
Cavoodles are the designer hybrid of crossing a purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with either a Toy or Miniature Poodle. Many genetic diseases prone to the purebred parents are recessive gene mutations. Offspring need two copies of a mutation to be affected. First generation Cavoodles inherit a set of genes from a Poodle parent and the other, from a Cavalier. This greatly reduces the chances of a first generation Cavoodle puppy developing the hereditary disease of a purebred puppy. The parents of our Cavoodle puppies have been DNA tested for hereditary diseases prone to their specific breed. Our studs are clear of all testable hereditary diseases, making our Cavoodle puppies non-affected!
We breed F1 (Cavalier x Poodle) or F1b (Cavoodle x Poodle) Cavoodles to ensure our Cavoodle puppies are furnished (hair on muzzle and eyebrows) and low to non-shedding. Breeding an F2 (Cavoodle x Cavoodle) will result in some of the puppies inheriting two copies of the non-furnishing gene and two copies of the straight coat. This can result in a number of puppies from the litter having a more Cavalier appearance, with a smooth muzzle and flat, shedding coat. While we think these type of Cavoodles are still very cute, our breeding program aims to produce teddy bear like Cavoodles, with a low/non shed coat.
Cavoodles are graced with the lovely temperament of the Cavalier and the high intelligence and low shedding coat of the Poodle. They are fun, loyal and highly trainable. Begun early, house training, socialisation and tricks, can be successfully taught. Friendly and affectionate, Cavoodles do well with small children and other pets. They have been bred for human companionship and should not be considered as an 'outdoor' dog. Their small size make them ideal for apartment and city living.
